I believe that every one of you has the ability to succeed at healthy lifestyle change.
I know you CAN succeed but I don’t know if you WILL.
That depends on the actions that you take and the decisions that you make along the way. The key is to not wait for the perfect program, the magic pill or the ideal time. The key is to make it happen and make it happen NOW! The question is not “are you able?”
The question is “are you willing?”
So I ask you today: Are you willing to do the work and make it happen in order to create the healthy life you dream about?
So which one of these two types of personalities’ best describes you at this time? Do you typically WATCH things happen. Or are you more like those that MAKE things happen.
Will you continue to watch success come to others or are you WILLING to do what it takes to make it happen for you?

“The World is full of willing people;
Some Are Willing To Work
The Rest Are Willing To Let Them!”
Robert Frost

It’s right there for the taking if you are willing to work and ready to make it happen!

One of the greatest challenges to creating change in life is incorporating new thinking into your day. Not only is changing the way we think a daunting task for us humans, it is also a critical piece of the change puzzle. In short, change is impossible… unless accompanied by new thinking. I was reminded of this the other day as I read a quote from the late American author Henry David Thoreau. Although Thoreau’s work was published in the mid-1800s, his writings can still teach us a very valuable lesson in 2008. That lesson is about change, and that is what I want to address today. Here is what Thoreau wrote: As a single footstep will not make a path on the earth, so a single thought will not make a pathway in your mind. To make a deep physical path, we walk again and again. To make a deep mental path, we must think over and over the kinds of thoughts we wish to dominate our lives.
What a powerful and accurate statement regarding change! Change is the result of consciously repeating a thought long enough until it becomes a natural part of your everyday thinking. This is an important lesson for those of you seeking change in your life. If change is what you desire, then mindfully repeating thoughts that support that change is critical. In modern day language, we might call these thoughts positive affirmations. So today I ask you to consider these important words of Mr. Thoreau and pick just one thought regarding change in your life that you would like to incorporate into your everyday thinking. This is very important for creating change. As philosopher Earl Nightingale states, “You become what you think about!”
What foods do you find stimulate you to eat?
Generally speaking, this refers to sugary foods, foods loaded with salt, and foods high in fats. Probably most importantly, this means any food that you find particularly difficult to eat according to your hunger (i.e. foods that are hard to stop eating even though you aren’t hungry any more, foods that prompt you to start eating when you aren’t hungry, and foods that draw your attention even when you aren’t hungry). This isn’t to suggest that you shouldn’t eat these foods ever again, just don’t make it easy to indulge every time you have a craving. Keep Unhealthy Foods Out of the house or within easy reach. We get cravings all the time. And if ignored, they will usually pass. Make it harder to give into spontaneous cravings. If you want really want ice cream, go out and get a scoop of the best ice cream you can find and really enjoy it. Just don’t keep it in your house.

When is Overeating Actually Binge Eating Disorder?

It’s National Eating Disorders Awareness Week and I want to focus on the most common eating disorder, Binge Eating Disorder (BED). An estimated 3.5%...

It’s National Eating Disorders Awareness Week and I want to focus on the most common eating disorder, Binge Eating Disorder (BED). An estimated 3.5% of women and 2% of men in the U.S. have binge eating disorder. The incidence is considerably higher among individuals seeking weight loss, but restrictive dieting and weight stigma tend to propel the Binge Eating Cycle* and compound the problem.
What is a binge?

Binge eating episodes are characterized by three or more of the following symptoms:

Eating until you feel uncomfortably full
Eating large amounts of food when not physically hungry
Eating much more rapidly than normal
Eating alone because you are embarrassed by how much you're eating
Feeling disgusted, depressed, or guilty after overeating

What is Binge Eating Disorder?

While the American Psychiatric Association’s (APA) Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), does not yet have a specific category for binge eating disorder, it does list diagnostic criteria:

Recurrent episodes of binge eating occurring at least twice a week for six months
Eating a larger amount of food than normal during a short time frame (any two-hour period)
Lack of control over eating during the binge episode (for example, feeling that you can’t stop eating or control what or how much you are eating)

In addition:

There is marked distress about binge eating
Those with BED do not use compensatory measures to counter the binge eating, such as vomiting or excessive exercise

What does BED feel like?

A person with BED may eat “normally” with others, stop on the way home to buy “binge” foods, then binge and hide evidence of the episode. The aftermath of a binge episode involves extreme feelings of shame and disgust.

Individuals with BED are typically competent and accomplished in other areas of their life, yet feel unable to stop this secret behavior. Bingeing is a way to escape or disconnect from feelings that seem intolerable. There may be difficulty managing states of emotional and physical distress without using food. On the other hand, the thought of giving up the behavior evokes anxiety. People with binge eating disorder may suffer for years, trying numerous diets, feeling alone, ashamed, and depressed. You are not alone; there are millions of people with BED.

*The Binge Eating Cycle is based on the Mindful Eating Cycle described in Eat What You Love, Love What You Eat.

Recent studies prove that snacking on the right foods at the right time can turn your body into a fat-burning machine. Get your metabolism going with a pre-dinner snack, 1-2 hours before your main meal. Doing so will help you stop eating once you're full, which is sometimes hard to do. The key to snacking is to keep the snack light so you won't overdo it, but to make it hearty enough that it will satiate you. Also, aim for a snack that's 6 grams of fiber, 10 grams of protein, and ends up being under 200 calories. Get started with the following four recipes.
And it never seems to fail that I still talk to patients that are convinced that drinking diet soda is not a problem, because nothing happens. The sky did not open up and the walls did not come down around them. I respond with "that first cigarette does not kill you either" But some need more convincing. So if losing your band is not enough incentive to drop your bubbly habit, how about if you found out that for each can of diet soft drink consumed each day, increased a person’s risk of obesity went up 41%.

Are you sure it is really worth it?

How to Handle Junk-Food Temptation
Q: My family always buys junk food, even though they know I hate eating that kind of stuff. But once it's in the house, I do eat it most of the time. How do I resist the temptation?

A: Losing weight is all about taking control of your life and ultimately accepting personal responsibility for your own actions when it comes to food intake and exercise. However, there are no prizes for doing it the hard way, so let’s figure out how you might improve your home food environment in the face of this challenge.

While it is reasonable for us to hope that others will decide to help us out by keeping foods out of the house, we live in a world where we are surrounded by food triggers. The better we become at managing our own behavior in the face of these challenges, the less vulnerable to weight regain we become. Ideally, you could take control by having a serious conversation with your mom and by negotiating some compromises since you are sharing the same space. It’s certainly okay to ask her to not have these foods in the house — but keep in mind that other people may not always want to eliminate the things they enjoy just because we struggle with them. They have a right to do as they wish. The people who love us often want to help but may have their own issues or barriers that are stopping them from meeting our requests.

Talk with your family and try to reach a compromise — for example, keeping those foods in one specific cupboard that you do not go into, or storing them in containers that aren't transparent and don’t show their contents. Perhaps ask them to warn you when they are going to eat these foods so you can choose to remain in the room or leave. Finally, think of other ways that you may be able to limit your exposure to these foods when they are in the house. In my experience, when people take control of their own behavior in spite of the challenges that surround them, the rewards are many — and sometimes include others getting on board too. The power of example can be potent.
